Despite his father Kharag Chhetri, being a Gorkha soldier in the Indian Army, with frequent transfers, it didn’t make any difference to Sunil. He had already become deeply passionate about football.

Sunil’s talent wasn’t just recognized locally; it earned him a spot among the best in international football.

Often hailed as “Captain Fantastic, he secured the third position for the most goals (94) in international matches, trailing only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Schooling Adventures

 

Sunil’s schooling began at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in Secunderabad, but due to his father’s transfers, he changed schools frequently. From there, he moved to the Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan, Delhi. Later, he pursued his graduation from Asutosh College in Kolkata.

As the son of an army man, Sunil Chhetri had the opportunity to travel across the country, often changing schools along the way. But one thing remained constant: his passion for football.

A Tale of Talent in Football

Another fascinating chapter in Sunil’s story is his talent in football. He changed schools for his love of football, a pivotal step towards playing at a higher level.

Despite being a proud student of the Army Public School, Sunil felt the urge to excel in football beyond just local tournaments.

  • He realized that to compete at a higher level, he needed to switch to a school that offered better opportunities. So, without even informing his parents, he made the bold move to transfer to Mamta Modern School, all to chase his football dreams.

Pursuing Sports Management in Barcelona

 

Reports suggest that Sunil Chhetri enrolled in a Sports Management course at the IED Business School in Barcelona, Spain. This step reflects his commitment to understanding the intricacies of the sports industry and furthering his knowledge beyond the field.

Emergence on the Domestic Scene

At the age of 16, Chhetri received an unexpected call-up to represent the Indian team in the Asian School Championship in Kuala Lumpur in 2001, while he was preparing for his 12th-grade exams in a college in New Delhi.

Recognizing Chhetri’s talent during the tournament, Mohun Bagan, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious football clubs, recruited him for the upcoming domestic season, setting the stage for his illustrious career.

Chhetri played for Mohun Bagan, JCT, East Bengal, and Dempo in Indian football for the next eight years, showcasing his football skills to the world.

Trials and Triumphs Abroad

 

His impressive performances caught the attention of foreign clubs, leading Chhetri to trial with Coventry City in England in 2007. Though an offer came from Queens Park Rangers in London, work permit issues thwarted his chance to play in England.

However, Chhetri’s dream of playing in England was nearly realized when Sporting Lisbon showed interest in him in 2012. He played five matches for his trial club before returning to India and signing with Chirag United in 2011.

Sunil Chhetri made his debut for the senior Indian national team in 2005 and scored his first international goal against Pakistan.

He played a crucial role in India’s victory in the 2007 Nehru Cup and was instrumental in securing the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, qualifying India for the AFC Asian Cup after 27 years.

In 2012, Chhetri became the captain of the national team and led India to another Nehru Cup triumph. He also played in the AFC Asian Cup in 2011 and 2019.

Equalling Pelé’s Record

In 2021, Sunil Chhetri made history. He equaled the great Brazilian footballer Pelé’s record by scoring a goal against Nepal in the SAFF Football Championship.

  • At that time, Chhetri had scored a total of 77 goals in international football, matching Pelé’s tally.

Surpassing Lionel Messi

In the same year, Sunil Chhetri surpassed Argentina’s superstar Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active goal-scorer in the world, just behind Pelé.

 

First Indian to score 50 goals in the Indian Super League

 

Chhetri’s remarkable career continued as he signed with Bengaluru FC in the newly formed Indian Super League (ISL) in 2013. He became the first Indian to score 50 goals in the league and ranks second in the list of top scorers in the league.

Honored with Arjuna, Khel Ratna Awards & Padma Shri Award

The Indian government has bestowed upon him the Arjuna Award in 2011 and the prestigious Khel Ratna Award in 2021.
