Mumbai clinch 42nd Ranji Trophy, beat Vidarbha in the final

Mumbai has once again secured the Ranji Trophy, triumphing over Vidarbha in the final match held at Wankhede Stadium on March 14. Vidarbha, in pursuit of 538 runs, was dismissed for 368, resulting in Mumbai’s victory by 169 runs.

Thus, Mumbai has clinched its 42nd Ranji Trophy, extending its record and ending a six-year gap since its last win.

The Mumbai team’s previous victory in the Ranji Trophy was in 2015-2016. Notably, Mumbai (then Bombay) also emerged as the inaugural Ranji Trophy champions in 1934-35.

  • Vidarbha was led by Akshay Wadekar.

Player of the Match – Musheer Khan

  • Musheer Khan from Mumbai was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ title in the final for his outstanding performance, scoring a remarkable century and claiming two wickets.

Player of the Series – Tanush Kotian

  • Tanush Kotian, the young all-rounder, played a crucial role in their victory by securing an impressive four-wicket haul in the fourth innings.
  • The off-spinner concluded with figures of 4/95 in 39 overs.
  • Remarkably, Kotian was honored as the Player of the Tournament for his exceptional all-round performances.

Prize Money and Trophy:

• The Mumbai team received the trophy along with a winning prize of Rs 5 crore.

• The Vidarbha team was awarded Rs 3 crore as prize money.

  • In the first innings, Vidarbha bowled out Mumbai for 224 runs, with Shardul Thakur contributing 75 runs.
  • Vidarbha struggled in their response, being dismissed for just 105 runs. Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, and Dhawal Kulkarni each claimed three wickets.

Mumbai holds the record for being the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history, securing the title 42 times.

• Karnataka has won the title 8 times, followed by Delhi (7 times), and Baroda (6 times).

• Saurashtra was the Ranji champion in 2022-23.
