1. India Won the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2024

In a thrilling final match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, India emerged victorious against South Africa.

The match took place at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

  • India’s Innings (176/7): Virat Kohli played a crucial role, scoring 76 runs off 59 balls. Axar Patel contributed with a quickfire 47 runs. Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje were among the wicket-takers for South Africa.
  • South Africa’s Innings (169/8): Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive 52 off 27 balls kept South Africa in the chase, but Hardik Pandya’s brilliant bowling (3/20) turned the tide in India’s favor. Jasprit Bumrah also played a crucial role, taking 2 wickets.
  • Player of the Match: Virat Kohli for his match-winning innings.
  • Player of the Series: Jasprit Bumrah, who impressed with 15 wickets throughout the tournament.

India secured victory by 7 runs, clinching their T20 World Cup title since 2007.

  • Following their triumphant T20i World Cup 2024 victory in Barbados, Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja have decided to retire from T20 internationals.
  • Kohli played a pivotal role in the final with his 76-run knock, and Rohit, the captain who led India to their first T20 World Cup title since 2007, bid farewell to the shortest format.
  • Jadeja, known for his all-round abilities and exceptional fielding, also announced his retirement from T20Is.
  • While their T20 journey ends, fans can still look forward to seeing them in Test matches and ODIs.

 

3. BCCI announced Rs 125 Cr prize money for team India after T20 World Cup win

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a whopping prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India following their T20 World Cup 2024 title triumph over South Africa in Barbados.
  • Led by captain Rohit Sharma, India secured a historic seven-run win in the final. This victory marked an 11-year ICC title drought for India in the T20 format.

 

4. India’s Jyothi Yarraji wins gold in women’s 100m hurdles

  • Jyothi Yarraji, India’s national record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, clinched the gold medal at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023 in Bhubaneswar.
  • Her victory in the 100m hurdles was hard-fought, as she completed the race in 13.09 seconds, narrowly defeating two Japanese runners, Terada Asuka (13.13s) and Aoki Masumi (13.26s), on a rain-soaked track at the Supachalasai Stadium.
  • Jyothi’s remarkable progress under coach James Hillier has solidified her position as India’s fastest women’s hurdler. Her national record stands at an impressive 12.82 seconds.

 

5. Former India Midfielder Bhupinder Singh Rawat passes away at 85

  • Bhupinder Singh Rawat, a former India midfielder, passed away at the age of 85 after a brief illness.
  • Known affectionately as “Scooter” by fans due to his speed and agility despite his diminutive frame, Rawat played a pivotal role in the 1969 Merdeka Cup in Malaysia.
  • He represented India in domestic football, playing for top teams like Delhi Garrison, Gorkha Brigade, and Mafatlal.

 

6. Bangladesh Navy signs contract for ‘Made in India’ 800 tons Ocean Going Tug with India’s GRSE

  • The Bangladesh Navy recently achieved a significant milestone by signing a contract for an “800-ton Ocean Going Tug” with India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineers (GRSE).
  • This tug, proudly “Made in India,” strengthens the maritime ties between the two nations.
  • The signing coincided with the visit of India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, to Bangladesh.

 

7. Three new criminal laws come into force

Three new criminal laws have come into force in India as of 1 July 2024. These laws replace the British-era statutes and aim to enhance legal procedures, victim rights, and investigations.

  1. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS): This new criminal code introduces several reforms, including summons through electronic modes, mandatory videography of crime scenes, and online registration of police complaints. Victims now receive a complimentary copy of the First Information Report (FIR).
  2. Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS): Under this law, arrested individuals have the right to notify a chosen person about their circumstances. Arrest details are prominently displayed in police stations and district headquarters for easy access by family and friends.
  3. Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA): The BSA prioritizes investigations of offences against women and children, mandating completion within two months. Victims receive free first-aid or medical treatment at all hospitals.

 

8. Japan to launch new banknotes on 3 July

  • On 3 July 2024, Japan will introduce new banknotes for denominations of 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen.
  • These redesigned notes feature cutting-edge anti-counterfeit technology developed over 150 years.
  • Notably, they are the world’s first to incorporate holography that makes historic figures’ portraits appear to rotate in 3D on the bills.
  • Eiichi Shibusawa, Umeko Tsuda, and Shibasaburō Kitasato are the individuals featured on these banknotes, each contributing significantly to Japanese society.

 

9. Nepal celebrates Rice Plantation Day

  • National Paddy Day, also known as Ropain Diwas, Dhan Diwas, and Ashadh Pandra, is a vibrant annual festival in Nepal that symbolizes the commencement of the rice planting season.
  • Celebrated on the 15th of Ashadh each year, this festival holds significant cultural and agricultural importance for the Nepalese people.
  • On this auspicious day, farmers joyfully plant rice seedlings, marking the beginning of a vital agricultural cycle.

 

10. Indian high commission launched ‘One Tree4Mother’ campaign in Bangladesh

  • On 30 June 2024, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka launched the “One Tree4Mother” campaign in Bangladesh.
  • Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury inaugurated the campaign by planting a Neem tree at the Indian Embassy. High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Kumar Verma was also present.
  • This initiative encourages citizens to collectively plant fruit, timber, and medicinal trees, fostering environmental stewardship and resilience.

 

11. Jharkhand celebrates Hul Diwas

  • Hul Diwas, observed on 30 June, commemorates the 1855 Santal rebellion in Jharkhand.
  • Led by brothers Sido and Kanhu Murmu, along with their companions, this uprising was a courageous stand against exploitative moneylenders (mahajans), oppressive landowners (zamindars), and colonial masters.
  • The Santal Hul, meaning ‘rebellion’ in Santali, sought justice and self-rule.
  • Despite its historical significance, the Hul has often been overshadowed by other uprisings. Nevertheless, it remains a symbol of valor and sacrifice, honoring those who defied British rule and fought for their land and freedom.

 

12. Titan to set up Tanishq’s factory in Bangladesh

  • Titan Company, a leading Indian lifestyle brand, is expanding its presence by launching the renowned jewellery brand Tanishq in Bangladesh.
  • In collaboration with the local enterprise Rhythm Group, Titan will establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for Tanishq’s exquisite jewellery in the Meghna Economic Zone in Narayanganj.
  • This strategic joint venture aims to make Tanishq accessible to discerning Bangladeshi consumers.
  • Titan already operates 17 Tanishq stores across various international markets, including the UAE, United States, Qatar, Singapore, and Oman.

 

13. NFSU and Haryana govt. sign an MoU to establish a Centre of Excellence in Panchkula

  • The Haryana government and the National Forensic Science University (NFSU), based in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, have signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
  • This collaboration aims to establish a “Centre of Excellence” in forensic science training and laboratory testing facilities in Panchkula, Haryana.
  • The center, spanning 50 acres, will play a crucial role in enhancing the criminal justice system by leveraging advanced technology and resources.

 

14. FATF adopts ‘Mutual Evaluation Report of India’

  • The Mutual Evaluation Report of India, adopted during the FATF plenary held in Singapore between 26 and 28 June 2024, places India in the ‘regular follow-up’ category—a distinction shared by only four other G20 countries.
  • This milestone recognizes India’s efforts to combat money laundering (ML) and terrorist financing (TF).
  • The report assessed India’s measures for effectiveness in addressing these challenges and compliance with FATF recommendations.

 

15. Sikkim celebrates ‘Gwala Diwas’

  • Gwala Diwas is a significant celebration in the Indian state of Sikkim.
  • Observed with enthusiasm, it honors the hard work and dedication of dairy farmers and milk producers.
  • On this day, various events and cultural programs take place to recognize their vital role in sustaining the local economy and ensuring a steady supply of fresh milk and dairy products.
  • The festivities serve as a tribute to their tireless efforts and contribution to the community.
