IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya Suspended by BCCI
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been suspended for one match due to a slow over-rate offense. This marks the third time Mumbai Indians have committed a slow over-rate offense this IPL season.
As a result, under the IPL Code of Conduct, Hardik Pandya has been handed a one-match suspension and fined INR 30 lakh. He will miss the first match of the next season i.e. IPL 2025.
During their match against Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium, the team failed to complete their overs on time. This was Mumbai Indians’ last match of IPL 2024, meaning Hardik will miss the first match of the next season. If Hardik moves to another team next season, he will miss the first match for that team.
Third Slow Over-Rate Offense for Mumbai Indians
This season, it was the third time Mumbai Indians failed to maintain the minimum over rate.
- Consequently, besides the one-match suspension, Hardik has been fined INR 30 lakh.
- Additionally, each member of the playing twelve, including the impact player, has been fined INR 12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is lower.
Official IPL Statement
An IPL media release stated, “Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined for slow over-rate during the match against Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium on May 17, 2024.” It added, “This was Mumbai Indians’ third offense under the IPL Code of Conduct for slow over-rate, resulting in a fine of INR 30 lakh for Hardik Pandya and a suspension for the next match.
Disappointing Season for Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians had a disappointing season, culminating in an 18-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants in their final league match.
- The team won only four matches and finished with eight points, placing them 10th on the points table.
Fan Criticism and Its Impact on Performance
Fans booed Hardik Pandya throughout the season after he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, which visibly affected his performance.
He scored only 216 runs in 13 innings with an average of 18 and took 11 wickets in 12 innings with an economy rate of 10.75.
Mumbai’s coach, Mark Boucher, acknowledged that fan criticism impacted both the team’s and Hardik’s performance.
