TikTok Ban in US, Concerns about National Security
TikTok Faces Nationwide Ban in the United States Amid National Security Concerns
On March 13, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill aiming to ban the Chinese social media platform TikTok with 352 votes in favor and 65 opposed.
The bill, known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, if it receives the President’s approval, would result in a nationwide ban of the video app.
US lawmakers claim that ByteDance is closely tied to the Chinese government and could potentially access the data of over 170 million American users at any given time.
Concerns about National Security:
US lawmakers have reignited discussions about banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok, which has millions of American users. This move is prompted by heightened concerns about national security, particularly regarding its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
According to the bill, ByteDance would need to either divest from TikTok within 165 days or cease its operations in America. The app could only continue its operations in the US if ByteDance chooses to sell off its interests.
India Bans TikTok in 2020:
In 2020, India took the lead in banning TikTok due to concerns regarding national security.
The government highlighted concerns regarding the popular Chinese social media platform’s data collection practices, and potential espionage activities.
