History of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, established in 2003 by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa to India on January 9, 1915.
Initially celebrated annually from 2003 to 2015, the event’s frequency was amended in 2015, and it has since been observed every two years. The Ministry of External Affairs selects a unique theme for each occasion.
