Significant Improvement in India’s Ranking
India’s rank on the Gender Inequality Index has witnessed a substantial improvement, jumping from 122nd in 2021 to 108th in 2022.
- This represents a commendable progress of 14 ranks within a year.
Over the past decade, India has consistently enhanced its position on the GII, progressing from 127th in 2014 to the current 108th rank.
Government Initiatives Driving Positive Change
The advancement in India’s ranking on the Gender Inequality Index can be attributed to the government’s decisive agenda for women’s empowerment through various policy initiatives.
- These initiatives encompass areas such as girls’ education, skill development, entrepreneurship facilitation, and workplace safety.
- Such comprehensive policies and legislative measures have contributed to the realization of the government’s ‘women-led development’ agenda.
Understanding the Gender Inequality Index
The Gender Inequality Index (GII), as defined by the UNDP, measures gender inequality across three dimensions: reproductive health,
empowerment, and
the labor market.
- It assesses the disparities between men and women in these areas, ranging from 0 (indicating equal treatment) to 1 (indicating severe gender-based inequality).
A low GII value indicates low inequality between women and men, and vice-versa.
