Narendra Modi takes oath as Prime Minister of India for 3rd consecutive term

  • On 9 June 2024, Narendra Damodardas Modi made history by taking oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term, equalling the record of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
  • The swearing-in ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office.
  • Along with Modi, his Council of Ministers, including 72 MPs, also took oath.
  • Modi’s BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won the general election with 293 seats.
  • The election saw a resurgence of India’s opposition, which won 234 seats.

 

RBI forms committee to examine various aspects for setting up Digital Payments Intelligence Platform

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) plans to establish a Digital Payments Intelligence Platform to mitigate payment fraud risks.
  • The platform aims to provide network-level intelligence and real-time data sharing across the digital payments ecosystem.

  • The committee is tasked with examining various aspects of setting up this digital public infrastructure and is expected to provide recommendations within two months.

  • She defeated Jasmine Paolini in two straight sets on Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris, France, on 8 June.

Bangladesh to import Hydro-Electricity from Bhutan

Sameer Bansal appointed CEO of PNB MetLife

  • Sameer Bansal has been appointed as the new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PNB MetLife India Insurance, effective from 1 July 2024.
  • He succeeds Ashish Srivastava, who has been appointed Managing Director for MetLife Inc’s Global Shared Services team in India.
  • Bansal, who has been with PNB MetLife since 2007, currently serves as the Chief Distribution Officer.
  • He brings over 25 years of experience in financial services, with a proven track record in leading various distribution channels. His appointment is subject to regulatory approvals.

 

TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu set to reclaim Andhra Pradesh CM Office

  • Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP President, is set to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth time. His party, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), won 135 seats in the 2024 Assembly elections.
  • This victory marks a significant comeback for Naidu, who was arrested in September 2023 over the alleged Skill Development scam. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 12 June 2024.

 

Health and Defence Ministries collaborate to establish Tele MANAS Cell for Armed Forces

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a dedicated Tele MANAS cell for the armed forces.
  • This cell will be operational at the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune for a pilot period of two years.
  • Tele MANAS is a digital extension of the District Mental Health Programme, offering 24/7 tele-mental health services.
  • The initiative aims to address the unique mental health needs of armed forces personnel and their families, providing them with direct access to specialised care.
