1. US designated Kenya as major non-NATO ally

  • United States President Joe Biden pledged to designate Kenya as a major non-NATO ally, making Kenya the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to hold this designation.
  • The decision was announced during Kenyan President William Ruto’s three-day visit to the US, and Biden described it as “a fulfillment of years of collaboration”.
  • This designation grants Kenya special status in terms of defense cooperation and arms exports, strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
  • The memorandum designating Kenya as President Biden issued a Major Non-NATO Ally on June 24, 2024.

 

2. Paraguay becomes 100th member of International Solar World

  • On 26 June 2024, the Republic of Paraguay officially became the 100th full member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
  • Paraguay’s Ambassador, Fleming Raul Duarte, handed over the instrument of ratification during a meeting in New Delhi.
  • The ISA, launched in 2015, aims to accelerate global solar energy deployment in support of climate action.
  • India, as the ISA’s headquarters, plays a crucial role in shaping sustainable energy solutions worldwide.

 

3. SSLV’s first dedicated commercial launch by ISRO in 2026

  • India’s NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) and Australia-based Space Machines Company have jointly announced the first dedicated commercial launch of the SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle).
  • The SSLV will deploy the Optimus satellite, weighing 450 kilograms, into orbit.
  • This mission, named Space MAITRI (Mission for Australia-India’s Technology, Research, and Innovation), marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between the two countries in the space domain.
  • By combining innovative spacecraft capabilities with India’s proven launch expertise, this collaboration promotes responsible space operations and mitigates the threat of space debris.

 

4. GRSE wins Sustainable Governance Champion Award

  • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. has been honored with the “Sustainable Governance Champion Award” at the Outlook Planet Sustainability Summit & Awards 2024.
  • This recognition highlights GRSE’s unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and governance excellence within the maritime and defense sectors.

 

5. UAE-India CEPA Council

  • The UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has made business between the UAE and India much stronger since it was first signed.
  • An excellent illustration of how it has involved people is the recent business roundtable that the UAE-India CECA Council (UICC) and the Indian Chamber of Instruction (ICC) arranged to unite Odisha-based companies in India.
  • E. Abdulnasser Alshaali Ph.D., the UAE Ambassador to India, is in charge of this event, which showcases the strategic economic ties being developed within the CEPA framework.

 

6. South India’s first leopard safari opens at Bannerghatta

  • South India’s first and the country’s largest leopard safari was inaugurated by Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre at the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP).
  • The safari covers an area of 20 hectares, demarcated and fenced as per Central Zoo Authority guidelines.
  • Currently, eight rescued leopards roam freely in the open forest area.
  • The safari’s undulating terrain features natural rocky outcrops and semi-deciduous forest, enclosed by a 4.5-meter-high vertical chain-link mesh with MS sheets at a 30° inclined angle.

 

7. CAG inaugurated India’s first ‘Chadwick House: Navigating Audit Heritage’ Museum

  • The ‘Chadwick House: Navigating Audit Heritage’ Museum in Shimla was inaugurated by Girish Chandra Murmu, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
  • This museum celebrates the rich heritage and contributions of the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) to the nation’s governance.
  • Housed at Chadwick House, where Indian Audit and Accounts Service officers underwent training in 1950, the museum showcases historical artifacts such as Remington typewriters, British-era franking machines, clocks, and trophies from CAG’s field offices.

 

8. Aksha Mohit Kamboj appointed Vice President of India Bullion Jewellers Association

  • The India Bullion Jewellers Association (IBJA) has appointed Aksha Mohit Kamboj as its Vice President, effective from 22 June.
  • Kamboj brings years of experience and expertise in the bullion and jewellery sector, further strengthening IBJA’s leadership.
  • She is the first woman to hold this prestigious post in the gold and jewellery industry.
  • As Vice President, Mrs. Kamboj will play a pivotal role in shaping IBJA’s strategic initiatives, fostering industry collaborations, and advocating for members nationwide.

 

9. BlinkX – India’s first gen AI Lab

  • BlinkX, the digital stockbroking arm of JM Financial, has launched the BlinkX Gen AI Lab, marking a first-of-its-kind venture in the Indian stock broking industry.
  • This state-of-the-art facility leverages cutting-edge AI technologies to personalize client experiences and streamline operations.

 

10. Mark Rutte appointed as next Secretary General of NATO

  • On 26 June 2024, the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg.
  • Rutte will assume his functions as Secretary General from 1 October 2024, when Mr. Stoltenberg’s term expires after ten years at the helm of the Alliance.
