1. NHAI organised international workshop on Global Navigation Satellite System based tolling
- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) organized an international workshop focused on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based tolling.
- The event aimed to explore the implementation of GNSS technology for efficient toll collection, enhancing transparency, and reducing traffic congestion.
- Experts from various countries discussed advancements in satellite-based tolling systems, shared best practices, and deliberated on integrating these technologies with existing infrastructure.
2. Anuj Tyagi appointed MD and CEO of HDFC ERGO General Insurance
- Anuj Tyagi has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDFC ERGO General Insurance.
- Effective from 1 July, 2024, he will succeed Ritesh Kumar, who held the position for 16 years.
- Tyagi, who has been with the company since 2008, previously served as Joint Managing Director.
- Kumar will transition to ERGO International’s board and become the Deputy COO, focusing on Asian growth markets. The appointment is pending approvals.
3. Indian Army opened Khalubar War Memorial to tourists in Ladakh
- In a tribute to the heroes of the Kargil War, the Indian Army has opened the Khalubar War Memorial to tourists in Ladakh.
- This ceremony was part of the Pre-Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations, as this year marks the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July.
- The memorial, located in the renowned Aryan Valley, commemorates the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who fought to reclaim the valley during the war.
- Notably, Captain Manoj Pandey’s heroic actions are immortalized at the memorial.
4. Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff
- Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
- Currently leading the Army’s Central Command, he will succeed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, who is slated to become the Chief of Army Staff upon General Manoj Pande’s retirement on 30 June.
- His appointment comes following a distinguished military career, marked by significant contributions to various operational and strategic roles within the Indian Army.
5. Sri Lanka to sign Debt Restructuring Agreements with India & Japan
- Sri Lanka is poised to sign bilateral debt restructuring agreements with key creditors Japan and India.
- These agreements aim to address the country’s economic crisis and enable renewed lending.
- Bilateral creditors account for 28.5% of Sri Lanka’s outstanding foreign debt, which stands at $37 billion.
- China is the largest bilateral creditor, followed by Japan and India.
6. Rohit Sharma becomes first batter to hit 200 sixes in T20Is
- Indian skipper Rohit Sharma achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first player in T20I cricket to hit 200 sixes.
- This milestone was reached during a high-stakes T20 World Cup Super 8 encounter against Australia in St Lucia.
- Rohit’s powerful knock of 92 runs off 41 balls, including eight sixes, not only showcases his immense power but also underscores his longevity and consistency in T20 cricket.
- His record stands head and shoulders above other contemporary players, with New Zealand’s Martin Guptill trailing at 173 sixes.
7. US declares Kenya a major non-NATO ally
- On 24 June 2024, the United States formally designated Kenya as its first major non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa.
- This significant strategic move enhances defence trade and security cooperation between the two nations.
- The MNNA status provides Kenya with certain benefits, although it does not obligate the U.S. to defend Kenya in case of an attack by a foreign entity.
8. Govt appointed Girija Subramanian as CMD of New India Assurance Company
- The Indian government has appointed Girija Subramanian as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of New India Assurance Company, effective from 19 June 2024. She will hold this position until her superannuation or further orders.
- Subramanian, a fellow member of the Insurance Institute of India, brings over 34 years of experience in reinsurance across various lines of business.
- Her appointment aims to strengthen the leadership of India’s largest general insurer.
9. Haryana govt increased reservation for OBC Category from 15% to 27%
- The Haryana government has increased the reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category from 15% to 27%.
- This decision, announced on 25 June 2024, aims to enhance educational and employment opportunities for the OBC community within the state.
- The move reflects the government’s commitment to social justice and equality, addressing longstanding demands for greater representation and support for OBC individuals.
