1. Brazil declared host of 2027 Women’s World Cup

  • On 17 May 2024, Brazil was chosen to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup at the FIFA Congress, defeating Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany in a combined bid to become the first nation in South America to do so.
  • Out of the FIFA Congress member associations, 119 supported Brazil’s bid to host the competition’s tenth edition, while only 78 voted in favor of the European candidacy.
  • Brazil hosted the 2014 men’s World Cup, therefore its ten stadiums were designed with large events in mind. The country also made a significant commercial and political commitment to the bid.

2. World AIDS Vaccine Day

  • World AIDS Vaccine Day, also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, is observed annually on 18 May.
  • The day aims to raise awareness about the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS and the importance of developing a vaccine.
  • It recognizes researchers, volunteers, and healthcare workers dedicated to developing a vaccine.
  • The day marks the anniversary of a 1997 speech by US President Bill Clinton highlighting the importance of an HIV vaccine.
  • The inaugural World AIDS Vaccine Day was held on 18 May 1998.

3. Indian Army set to received Russian Igla-S Air Defence Systems

  • With the upcoming delivery of Russian Igla-S Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) systems, the Indian Army is ready to improve its air defense capabilities.
  • India’s defense readiness has advanced significantly as a result of this procurement, which includes a technology transfer deal between Russia’s Rosoboronexport and Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited (ADSTL).
  • The Igla-S VSHORAD system is a portable missile system that is intended to counter low-altitude aerial threats in close vicinity, such as airplanes, helicopters, and drones.

4. Author Malti Joshi passed away at 90

  • Renowned Hindi and Marathi writer Malti Joshi passed away at the age of 90.
  • She was popularly known as “Malwa ki Meera” and was awarded the Padma Shri by the then President Ramnath Kovind in 2018.
  • She wrote more than 60 books in Hindi and Marathi languages.
  • Some of her most popular works include “Madhayantar”, “Pataakshep”, “Parajay”, “Ek Ghar Sapno Ka”, “Woh Tera Ghar, Ye Mera Ghar”, and her novel “Aurat Ek Raat Hai”.

5. International Museum Day 2024

  • International Museum Day is celebrated every year on 18 May.
  • International Museum Day is an annual event that aims to raise public awareness of museums.
  • The theme for International Museum Day 2024 is “Museums for Education and Research”.
  • The inaugural International Museum Day was organized in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

6. India and Britain Reaffirm Commitment to FTA at annual strategic dialogue

  • India and Britain reaffirmed their commitment to conclude a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA) at the annual UK-India Strategic Dialogue held in London.
  • This marks a significant step as the two nations have already conducted 13 rounds of talks, with the 14th round commencing in January 2024.
  • The dialogue was attended by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and his UK counterpart, Sir Philip Barton, Permanent Under-Secretary.
  • They reviewed the progress made on the UK-India 2030 Roadmap since the last dialogue in January 2023 and looked ahead to the next phase of bilateral cooperation.

7. Indian Army sets up world’s highest repair unit near China border

  • At elevations of more than 14,500 feet, in Eastern Ladakh, close to the Chinese border, the Indian Army has constructed two of the highest tank repair facilities in the world.
  • After the 2020 India-China standoff, these facilities, which are situated in Nyoma and the DBO Sector, sustain more than 500 tanks and infantry combat vehicles.
  • With temperatures as low as minus forty degrees, our innovative Medium Maintenance (Reset) Facilities guarantee the operational readiness of armored vehicles in harsh environments.
  • Following the start of the standoff between India and China in April and May of 2020, a significant number of tanks and BMP combat vehicles, as well as Indian-made armoured vehicles such as the Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles, were stationed in Eastern Ladakh.

8. India, Australia, Indonesia conclude trilateral maritime security workshop

  • After going over the current issues pertaining to maritime security as well as potential areas of cooperation between the three maritime neighbors of India, Australia, and Indonesia, the second edition of the Trilateral Maritime Security Workshop (TMSW) came to an end.
  • ‘Indian Ocean Region: Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Regional Maritime Security’ was the workshop theme.
  • The exercise took place at INS Dronacharya in Kochi, India, on 15 and 17 May.
  • Under the auspices of Headquarters Southern Naval Command, representatives from the three participating Navies participated in the Workshop.

9. Lai Ching-te sworn in as Taiwan’s new president

  • Lai Ching-te, also known as William Lai, was sworn in as the 8th President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in May 2024.
  • He is a Taiwanese politician and former physician. The inauguration ceremony took place in Taipei on 20 May 2024.
  • Lai Ching-te is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He was the fifth popularly elected president of Taiwan.
  • The ceremony was attended by representatives from 29 countries, including those from Taiwan’s last 12 diplomatic allies in the Pacific, Central America, and the Holy See.
