1. India and Iran signed long-term contract for operation of Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar

  • On 13 May 2024, India and Iran signed the long-term contract for the operation of the Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar.
  • With this agreement, foundations have been laid for India’s long-term involvement at Chabahar.The signature of this contract will have a multiplier effect on the viability and visibility of Chabahar port.
    • The contract will give a boost to regional connectivity and India’s linkages with Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eurasia.

2. Ramcharitmanas, Panchatantra, and Sahṛdayāloka-Locana enter ‘UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register’

  • The Panchatantra, Sahṛdayaloka-Locana, and the Ramcharitmanas are now part of ‘UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register.
  • India is proud of this inclusion, which attests to the nation’s rich cultural and literary history.
  • It emphasizes the value of appreciating and preserving the various stories and artistic manifestations that define our common humanity and represents a step forward in international efforts to preserve cultural diversity
  • Such classic works as the “Ramcharitmanas,” “Panchatantra,” and “Sahṛdayaloka-Locana” have had a profound impact on Indian literature and culture, helping to shape the moral fiber and artistic manifestations of the country.
  • Notably, Acharya Anandvardhan, Pt. Vishnu Sharma, and Goswami Tulsidas wrote “Sahṛdayaloka-Locana,” “Panchatantra,” and “Ramcharitmanas,” respectively.

3. India-France joint military exercise SHAKTI commences in Meghalaya

India-France joint military exercise SHAKTI commences in Meghalaya

  • The 7th iteration of the India-France Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI got underway in Umroi on 13 May 2024, in a state-of-the-art Foreign Training Node located in Meghalaya.
  • The exercise is planned to take place in May 2024, from 13 to 26 May 2024.
  • An annual training exercise called Exercise SHAKTI is alternately held in France and India. The most recent iteration took place in November 2021 in France.
  • The 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE) will be the primary representative of the 90-person French contingent.
  • Enhancing both parties’ combined military capability to conduct multi-domain operations in a Sub Conventional setting under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate is the aim of Exercise SHAKTI.

4. Former Deputy CM of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi passed away at 72

  • Former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi passed away on 13 May 2024.
  • He became the general-secretary of the Patna University Students’ Union in 1973.
  • During his political career spanning over three decades, Sushil Kumar Modi held various positions, including MLA, MLC and member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
  • He served as the deputy CM of Bihar from 2005 to 2013, and again from 2017 to 2020.
  • Modi became an MLA for the first time in 1990 from Patna Central constituency and was made the chief whip of the BJP legislature party.
  • Sushil Kumar Modi became a member of Lok Sabha from Bhagalpur in 2004.

5. Wipro appointed Vinay Firake as CEO for APMEA Strategic Market Unit

Wipro Limited, a leading technology services and consulting company, announced the appointment of Vinay Firake as the Chief Executive Officer, APMEA (Asia Pacific, India, Middle East & Africa) Strategic Market Unit (SMU), effective immediately.

  • Vinay will report to Srini Pallia and will also join the Wipro Executive Board.
  • He was most recently the Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Wipro-Nordics Business Unit based in Stockholm, where he led Operations across all industries and services.

6. Coca-Cola India’s first ever partnership with Hockey India for National Women’s Hockey League

In preparation for the National Women’s Hockey League in 2024, Anandana, The Coca-Cola India Foundation, has formed its first partnership with Hockey India.

  • By giving players access to vital resources and assistance, this partnership seeks to advance women’s hockey and is consistent with Coca-Cola India’s #SheTheDifference initiative, which promotes sports and gender equality.
  • This three-year partnership demonstrates Coca-Cola India’s commitment to sports, especially at the community level.
  • With Anandana, the company hopes to improve women’s hockey by offering specialized coaching, gear for training, dietary assistance, and growth-promoting camps and competitions.

7. Dileep Sanghani elected as chairman of IFFCO

Former parliamentarian Dileep Sanghani was re-elected as chairman of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) for the second consecutive term.

  • The elections, held on 9 May 2024, at IFFCO’s corporate office in New Delhi, saw the emergence of Dileep Sanghani as the Chairman and Balvir Singh as the Vice Chairman of IFFCO.
  • Singh is a senior member of the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh and has previously served as the state convenor of the BJP cooperative cell and as district president of Shahjahanpur.
