1. Devon Thomas faces a five-year penalty for violating the anti-corruption policy

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) banned West Indies player Devon Thomas from all cricket on 2 May 2024.
  • Devon Thomas, a West Indies international, has received a five-year suspension following his admission of guilt to seven charges, which include involvement in match fixing.
  • Thomas had admitted to breaking seven anti-corruption codes from the Caribbean Premier League, Sri Lanka Cricket, and the Emirates Cricket Board.
  • In accordance with the applicable rules, the ICC declared the term of ineligibility in its function as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official and decided to postpone the final 18 months of the time.
  • He accepted breaching seven counts of the anti-corruption codes of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

2. Govt to train 1,500 civil servants of Bangladesh in next five years

  • Over the next five years, India will provide mid-career capacity building programs on good governance initiatives to 1,500 public workers from Bangladesh.
  • The decision to extend the current agreement was made during an Indian delegation’s visit to Bangladesh from April 28 to 30, which was led by Srinivas.
  • The two parties decided to extend their current Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which calls for 1,500 civil service officials from Bangladesh to participate in capacity-building programs at India’s National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) between 2025 and 2030.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding outlines 32 programs for middle management and 14 programs for senior executives.

3. Pratima Singh IRS appointed as Director in DPIIT

  • Pratima Singh, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, has been named Director of the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).
  • She will hold the position of Director at DPIIT for a period of five years following the date of charge assumption or until further directives, whichever comes first.
  • Pratima Singh’s appointment to the DPIIT is a big deal because the department is still working to attract investments and foster a business-friendly atmosphere.

4. Dairy giant AMUL to sponsor US and South Africa in T20 World Cup in June

  • During the T20 World Cup in June, the Indian dairy company AMUL will sponsor the cricket teams from South Africa and the United States.
  • Beginning on June 1, the USA will co-host the competition for the first time. The semifinals and finals of the competition will be held in the Caribbean.
  • The tournament’s first game between the United States and Canada will take place in Dallas.
  • This partnership with the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) is a big step in the right direction for the national growth and popularity of cricket.
  • AMUL is connected to the South African side participating in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2019 ODI series.

5. 4th India-Maldives High-Level Core Group Meeting held in New Delhi

  • On 3 May 2024, in New Delhi, the India-Maldives High-Level Core Group convened for the fourth time.
  • The two parties carried on their conversation over a wide range of topics pertaining to bilateral cooperation.
  • These include of capacity-building programs, measures to improve bilateral commerce and investment, defense cooperation, and development cooperation projects.
  • MEDEVAC (medical evacuation) and humanitarian services are provided to the Maldivian population by Indian aviation platforms. During the discussion, all parties reviewed the ongoing efforts to facilitate these operations.

6. India to host BWF World Junior Badminton Championships 2025

  • India will host the BWF World Junior Championships 2025 at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on 30 April.
  • The 2025 edition in India will mark the return of the BWF Junior World Championships to the country for the first time since 2008 when Pune hosted the event.
  • The dates for the 2025 edition will be announced later.

7. ECI launched largest-ever voter awareness drive for Lok Sabha Elections

  • The Election Commission has launched the biggest-ever outreach and awareness campaign to encourage greater voter turnout for the Lok Sabha elections.
  • It stated that as part of this focused outreach effort, the Commission has worked with a number of public and private sector organizations pro gratis.
  • According to the statement, participation in Phase 1 has been 66.14 percent, and in Phase 2, 66.71 percent. While it falls short of the high standards set by the 2019 General Elections, this is still one of the highest voter turnouts in Indian history.

8. Former Ranji Trophy top-scorer Milind to play T20 World Cup for USA

  • Milind Kumar, a former batter from Delhi and the highest run scorer in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, has been included in the American team for the T20 World Cup, which begins on June 1.
  • The West Indies and the USA are co-hosting the tournament. Monank Patel, a native of Gujarat, will lead the team of fifteen players.
  • The right-handed hitter Milind, who made 1331 runs in the Ranji Trophy season of 2018–19, spent seven seasons as a player for Delhi before moving to the United States in pursuit of better possibilities.
  • Before moving to the US, Milind, a cricket player from Delhi, represented the states of Sikkim and Tripura in domestic competitions.
  • In the Indian Premier League, the 33-year-old hitter also represented Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals).

9. Solomon Islands picks China-friendly Manele as new Prime Minister

  • On 2 May 2024, legislators in the Solomon Islands chose Jeremiah Manele to be their next prime minister. Manele, a former foreign minister, has promised to carry on the country’s foreign strategy that has brought it closer to China.
  • In the 50-seat parliament, Governor General Sir David Vunagi declared outside parliament house that Manele had received 31 votes to opposition leader Matthew Wales’s 18 votes.
  • The government of outgoing Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare lost half of its seats in the national election held last month, although no political group was able to win a majority.
  • The archipelago of the Solomon Islands is strategically located 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) northeast of Australia.

10. NPCI partners Bank of Namibia to develop UPI like payment system

  • An agreement has been reached by the Bank of Namibia and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) International Payments Limited (NIPL) to assist in the development of an instant payment system similar to the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for Namibia.
  • With the aid of technology and UPI’s experience from India, the alliance aims to assist Namibia in modernizing its financial milieu.
  • Enhancing interoperability, cost, connectedness to local and worldwide payment networks, and accessibility are all included in this.
  • The purpose of this strategic alliance is to support real-time Person-to-Person (P2P) and Merchant payment transactions (P2M) in the African country while also improving digital financial services.

11. 7th India-Indonesia Joint Defence Cooperation Committee Meeting held in New Delhi

  • The 7th India-Indonesia Joint Defence Cooperation Committee meeting was held in New Delhi on 3 May 2024.
  • Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Secretary General of the Indonesian Defence Ministry, Air Marshal Donny Ermawan Taufanto, co-chaired the meeting.
  • The progress made on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives was deliberated in meetings of the Working Group on Defence Cooperation and Defence Industries Cooperation was also reviewed by the co-chairs.
  • During the visit, the Secretary-General visited the DRDO headquarters in New Delhi as well as TATA Advanced Systems and L&T Defence facilities in Pune.

12. India, Netherlands hold 12th Foreign Office Consultations

  • The Hague, Netherlands hosted the 12th India-Netherlands Foreign Office Consultations on May 2, 2024.
  • Pavan Kapoor, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, headed the Indian delegation. Paul Huijts, Secretary General of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the Dutch delegation.
  • December 2022 saw the conclusion of the most recent Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi.
  • The parties discussed the next course of action in the important sectors of water, agriculture and health, science and technology, high-tech and innovation, and both acknowledged the progress made in all areas.

13. 10th Edition of World Art Dubai opened at World Trade Centre in Dubai

  • With a significant Indian influence, the 10th edition of World Art Dubai included artwork by Indian artists and art organizations as it opened at the World Trade Center in Dubai on 2 May 2024.
  • The distinguished expo, which runs until 5th May, is showcasing 10,000 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, digital art installations, and more, alongside more than 400 esteemed galleries and solo artists representing more than 60 countries. Indian art is being showcased on a worldwide scale.
  • Twelve national pavilions showcasing artistic expressions from China, Turkey, Iran, America, Russia, the UAE, Europe, the UK, and the Arab world are on display alongside the artworks.
