Climate Change Performance Index: India ranks at 7th place

In this year’s Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), India secured the 7th position, showcasing an improvement of one rank from the previous year. The country has consistently maintained its position among the highest performers for five consecutive years, as revealed in a report unveiled during the global climate conference (COP-28) held in Dubai.

Denmark maintains its position as the top-ranked country, although its overall performance does not reach a level high enough to receive an excellent rating.

Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI)

The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) serves as a tool to promote transparency in both national and international climate politics. This index employs a standardized framework for evaluating and comparing the climate performance of 63 countries and the European Union, collectively responsible for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The assessment of climate protection performance within the CCPI is conducted across four categories:

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions,
  • Renewable Energy,
  • Energy Use, and
  • Climate Policy.

Key points

No country attains a sufficiently high performance across all index categories to secure an overall very high rating, leaving the first three overall positions vacant.

  • The findings indicate that, even if all nations matched the commitment of current leaders, collective efforts would still fall short of preventing harmful climate change.

Countries holding high rankings should not relent in their efforts. Governments must intensify their actions to steer the world toward a trajectory that ensures global warming remains well below a 2°C increase. Even better, 1.5°C.
