However, this year in 2024, the government has chosen to honor five individuals with the Bharat Ratna award marking the highest number conferred in a single year. The list includes;
- Former prime ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh,
- Agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan.
- Veteran BJP leader LK Advani
- Former Bihar Chief minister Karpoori Thakur.
As of 2024, the total count of Bharat Ratna Awards has reached to 53.

7. Govind Ballabh Pant (1957):
- Statesman and one of the key architects of modern India, served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
8. Dhondo Keshav Karve (1958):
- Social reformer and educator, known for his work in promoting women’s education and widow remarriage.
9. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1961):
- Physician, freedom fighter, and the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
10. Purushottam Das Tandon (1961):
- Freedom fighter and a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement.
11. Rajendra Prasad (1962):

12. Zakir Husain (1963):

- Legendary playback singer, often referred to as the “Nightingale of India.”
40. Bismillah Khan (2001):
- Shehnai maestro and one of the finest classical musicians in India.
41. Bhimsen Joshi (2009):
- Renowned vocalist in Hindustani classical music.
42. N.R. Rao (2014):
- Eminent chemist and a leading figure in scientific research in India.
43. Sachin Tendulkar (2014):
- Cricket legend, widely regarded as one of the greatest batters in the history of the sport.
44. Atal Bihari Vajpayee (2015):
- Inspirational statesman and known for his oratorical skills. He served three terms as the 10th Prime Minister of India.
- Initially, he held the position for a brief period of 13 days in 1996. Subsequently, he served for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004.
45. Madan Mohan Malaviya (2015):
- Educationist and founder of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He served as the president of the Indian National Congress on two occasions and was the founder of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha.
46. Nanaji Deshmukh (2019):
- Social activist and a key figure in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
47. Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika (2019):
- Noted singer, lyricist, and filmmaker, celebrated for his contributions to Indian art and culture.
48. Pranab Mukherjee (2019):
- He served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. He was the first individual from West Bengal to occupy the position of President of India.
49. Karpoori Thakur (2024):
- He served as the Chief Minister of the Bihar statetwice, initially from December 1970 to June 1971, and then from December 1977 to April 1979. He mainly focused on the upliftment of marginalised communities.
50. Lal Krishna Advani (2024):
- Former Minister of Home Affairs who played a pivotal role in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) growth and served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India.
51. PV Narasimha Rao (2024):
- He served as the Prime Minister from June 21, 1991, to May 16, 1996. An agriculturist and a lawyer by profession, he also held the position of Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
52. Chaudhary Charan Singh (2024):
- He served as the Prime Minister from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980. Additionally, he held the position of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice, first in 1967 and then in 1970.
53. MS Swaminathan (2024):
- He is popularly known as the father of the Green Revolution in India.
