India, Russia deal on future units of Kudankulam Nuclear Plant
India and Russia have entered into significant agreements reinforcing their longstanding partnership. On December 26, the pivotal pacts were signed, marking a substantial advancement in the development of upcoming power-generating units at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.
Key agreements and announcement by S. Jaishankar
S. Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister currently on a five-day visit to Russia, disclosed the signing of “very important” agreements related to the future units of the Kudankulam nuclear project. This revelation followed an extensive meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, centered on bilateral economic cooperation.
Background of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant
The Kudankulam nuclear power plant, the largest in India, has been under construction in Tamil Nadu since March 2002 with technical support from Russia.
It is located in Kudankulam within the Tirunelveli district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The initial phase became operational in February 2016, functioning at its designated capacity of 1,000 MW. Plans anticipate the plant reaching full capacity by 2027.
