UGC warns students against pursuing MPhil programmes

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notification, advising students against pursuing an MPhil degree as it is no longer recognized. The commission has also cautioned universities against offering the program, and admissions for the academic year 2023-24 are prohibited.

However, MPhil degrees awarded before the notification of new regulations in 2022 will remain valid.

UGC Official Notification on MPhil Degree

In its public notice, the commission revealed that it has learned about certain universities inviting fresh applications for the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) program. It clarified that an MPhil degree is no longer recognized.

The UGC emphasized that the notification underscores Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022, which prohibits higher educational institutions from offering MPhil programs. The UGC had previously declared the MPhil degree illegitimate, instructing higher educational institutions not to offer MPhil programs.
