Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away at the age of 92 on December 26, 2024. He was admitted to AIIMS, New Delhi, after a sudden decline in his health. The hospital has not yet disclosed the details surrounding his demise. The Delhi Congress, expressing their grief, described his passing as an “irreparable loss” to Indian politics, highlighting his remarkable contributions as a visionary economist and leader.

Early Life and Education

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh was an exceptional academic, completing his early studies at Panjab University.

  • He later pursued advanced education at the University of Cambridge and earned his doctorate in Economics from the University of Oxford.
  • His illustrious career began with key economic roles, including serving as the Chief Economic Adviser, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

Dr. Singh’s tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 was a turning point for India’s economy. He spearheaded economic liberalization, overcoming a severe balance of payments crisis and paving the way for India’s transformation into a global economic power.

Tenure as Prime Minister (2004-2014)

 

In 2004, he became India’s first Sikh Prime Minister and served two consecutive terms, overseeing significant reforms and forging a landmark nuclear deal with the United States.

  • Despite controversies during his tenure, Dr. Singh’s integrity and dedication to public service remain unquestioned.
