1. BJP got 240 seats in Lok Sabha elections 2024

  • The Election Commission of India has declared results for 542 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 seats and the Congress 99.
  • The result for the Beed constituency in Maharashtra — where the NCP (Sharad Pawar) candidate Bajrang Manohar Sonwane is leading the BJP’s Pankaja Munde — is still awaited.
  • While the Lok Sabha has 543 members, counting was held for 542 seats after the BJP’s Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed.
  • The BJP won in 240 seats, falling short of the 272 majority mark and needing the support of allies in the party-led NDA for government formation, a far cry from the 303 and 282 seats it had won in 2019 and 2014., respectively.

2. BJP secured 78 out of 147 assembly seats in Odisha’s 2024 elections

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 78 out of 147 assembly seats in Odisha’s 2024 elections, dethroning the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
  • This marks the first time the BJP has formed a government in the state, ending BJD’s long-standing rule.
  • Naveen Patnaik, the incumbent Chief Minister, failed to secure a place in the record books as the longest-serving CM.
  • Additionally, the BJP swept the Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, winning 20 out of 21.

3. NDA Alliance Triumphs in Andhra Pradesh with Decisive Election Win

  • The NDA alliance, comprising TDP, BJP, and Janasena, achieved a significant victory in Andhra Pradesh’s recent elections.
  • The coalition secured 21 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats and an impressive tally of 164 out of 175 Assembly seats.
  • This outcome has notably shifted the political landscape in the region.
  • The distribution of wins among the alliance partners saw TDP leading with 16 Lok Sabha seats, followed by BJP with three and Janasena with two.

4. Siddhalinga Pattanashetti won the Gudleppa Hallikeri Award 2024

  • Poet and playwright Siddhalinga Pattanashetti has been announced as the recipient of the Gudleppa Hallikeri Award for 2024.
  • This prestigious award is conferred by the Gudleppa Hallikeri Memorial Foundation, based in Hosaritti, Haveri District.
  • The award includes a monetary prize of ₹25,000 and a memento. The ceremony to honor Siddhalinga Pattanashetti will take place on 6 June.

5. Maldives bans entry to Israeli passport holders

  • The Maldives has banned entry for visitors with Israeli passports.
  • This decision, driven by protest against Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, makes the Maldives the first country since the 7 October attack to institute such a ban.
  • Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives last year, accounting for 0.6% of foreign tourist arrivals.
  • The ban aligns the Maldives with 27 other Muslim-majority countries that have longstanding restrictions on Israeli passport holders.

6. School Education Department signed MoU with National Book Trust for Rashtriya E-Pustakalaya

  • The Department of School Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, has signed an MoU with the National Book Trust to establish an institutional framework for the Digital Library Platform, Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya.
  • This groundbreaking initiative aims to foster a lifelong love of reading among Indian children and youth by offering over 1,000 non-academic books in more than 22 languages, including English.
  • The platform will be accessible round-the-clock, regardless of geographic location, and will categorize books for readers aged 3-18 years.

7. India has created a world record with 64.2 Crore voters participating in Lok Sabha polls

  • India achieved a historic milestone during the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, with 64.2 crore voters actively participating.
  • This remarkable turnout included 31.2 crore women, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping the democratic process.
  • The scale of this electoral exercise surpassed that of all G7 countries (United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada) combined.
  • Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced this world record, highlighting the tireless efforts of over 68,000 monitoring teams and 1.5 crore polling and security personnel.

8. Ashok Leyland rolls out ‘Sarathi Suraksha’ policy

  • Ashok Leyland, a heavy commercial vehicle manufacturer, has launched the ‘Sarathi Suraksha’ Policy to safeguard the driver community.
  • This ‘Unnamed GPA (Group Personal Accident) policy’ provides comprehensive protection for drivers operating Ashok Leyland vehicles.
  • It covers accidental death, permanent and partial disability, and includes a special education bonus for children.
  • The policy offers insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per chassis.

9. First Pig-to-Human liver transplant deemed successful

  • A groundbreaking milestone was achieved when a 71-year-old man in China received a liver transplant from a genetically modified pig.
  • The surgery, which lasted 8 hours, aimed to prolong the patient’s life and provide crucial insights for doctors.
  • This achievement represents progress in xenotransplantation, where organs from one species are transplanted into another.

10. India joins U.S.’s Red Flag air and RIMPAC naval exercises

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy are participating in two mega multinational war games hosted by their U.S. counterparts.
  • The IAF has deployed Rafale fighter jets for the two-week multinational air exercise Red Flag, which commenced in Alaska on May 30.
  • Meanwhile, the Indian Navy is deploying the indigenous stealth frigate INS Shivalik for Ex RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific), scheduled to be held in Hawaii from 25 June to 2 August.
  • These exercises aim to offer realistic training in a simulated combat environment, enhancing joint interoperability and tactical exchange.
