1.Vladimir Putin sworn in for new 6-year term as Russia’s president

  • Vladimir Putin took the oath of office as Russia’s president on May 7, 2024, during a ceremony held within Moscow’s Grand Kremlin Palace. Putin will serve a six-year term.
  • Putin has been in charge of the Kremlin for almost 25 years, making him the most enduring leader since Josef Stalin. His current term doesn’t end until 2030.
  • Putin took over as President of Russia in the final hours of 1999, replacing President Boris Yeltsin, and turned the nation from one that was just recovering from economic catastrophe to a prominent player on the international scene.
  • Russia is seeking assistance from other regimes such as China, Iran, and North Korea in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has turned into the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. Russia has been subject to severe sanctions from the West.

2. Amazon unveils first electric seaport trucks amid push to slash emissions

  • The first of twelve Volvo electric large rigs that Amazon intends to use this year to haul goods from the busiest container harbor in the country—located in southern California—will be unveiled on May 7, 2024.
  • Eight of those semi-trucks are currently in service at the port complex in Los Angeles/Long Beach, where all “drayage” trucks are required to have zero emissions by 2035.
  • By expanding its car electrification projects throughout its land-based logistics network, which connects ocean ports to customer doorsteps, Amazon is achieving a first with this deployment.
  • The company’s goal of having net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 depends on this endeavor.

3. Sri Lanka signed 20-year power deal with Adani Green Energy

  • Sri Lanka and Adani Green Energy Ltd. of India have finalized a 20-year electricity agreement.
  • The proposal, which calls for Adani to build two wind power plants, has been approved by Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers, which is a significant step toward the development of renewable energy sources.
  • The fact that Adani’s $442 million investment in 484 megawatt wind power projects was approved last year highlights the two countries’ expanding cooperation in the field of renewable energy.
  • According to the Sri Lankan government, Adani will get 8.26 cents per kilowatt-hour, or about 7 rupees, as part of the agreement.

4. Sheikh Hasina urged IOM to secure more funds for Rohingya Assistance

  • On 7 May, 2024, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh encouraged the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to raise additional monies for the benefit of the Rohingyas who are being housed in Bangladesh through newer sources.
  • Since aid to the Rohingyas has decreased, the IOM must to seek for new collaborators in order to increase funding for them.
  • The prime minister also pleaded with the IOM to assist in the Rohingya population’s relocation to Bhashanchar, where a home with all the amenities, including jobs, healthcare, and education, has been established for one lakh people.
  • The premier was briefed on the security situation in the Rohingya camps by the IOM DG, who had visited them yesterday in Cox’s Bazar.

5. 5th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting between India and Bhutan was held in Leh

  • The 5th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting between India and Bhutan was held on 6th-7th May, 2024 in Leh, Ladakh.
  • The 5th JGC meeting discussed a host of bilateral issues such as opening of new Land Customs Stations and notifying new trade routes, development of infrastructure, automation and digitisation of transit processes, prevention of smuggling, coordinated cross-border management, pre-arrival exchange of Customs data, bilateral agreement on Customs cooperation and movement of transit cargo under electronic cargo system among others.
  • These meetings play a vital role in enhancing connectivity and developing trade infrastructure for smooth customs clearance at land borders.
  • There are 10 Land Customs Stations along the India-Bhuan Border in the States of West Bengal (6) and Assam (4).

6. Real Madrid has clinched their 36th La Liga title

  • Real Madrid secured the title on 4 May 2024, after a combination of their own victory and a loss by their closest rivals.
  • The title was clinched following Real Madrid’s win against Cádiz, with the team achieving a 3-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
  • Barcelona’s 4-2 defeat at the hands of Girona ensured that Real Madrid’s lead at the top became insurmountable.
  • The La Liga, or the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, is the premier men’s professional football league in Spain.

7. 2nd session of India-Nigeria Joint Trade Committee held in Abuja

  • A seven-member delegation from India held a Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting with their Nigerian counterparts in Abuja from April 29 to April 30, 2024.
  • In a comprehensive dialogue, both sides undertook a detailed review of recent developments in bilateral trade and investment ties and acknowledged the vast untapped potential for further expansion.
  • Both sides agreed to early conclusion of Local Currency Settlement System Agreement to further strengthen bilateral economic ties.

8. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank names Sanjeev Nautiyal as MD & CEO

  • Sanjeev Nautiyal has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved Sanjeev Nautiyal’s appointment as MD & CEO from 1 July 2024, for a period of three years.
  • Sanjeev Nautiyal is a seasoned banker with over three decades of experience.
  • He retired as a Deputy Managing Director at the State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest lender.

9. Panama elected conservative Jose Mulino as President

  • Jose Raul Mulino, a conservative candidate and former Minister of Public Security, was declared the winner of the presidential election in Panama on 5 May 2024.
  • He secured 34% of the vote, outpacing his closest rival, Ricardo Lombana, who received 25%.
  • José Raúl Mulino will take over from the outgoing president, Laurentino Cortizo, on 1 July 2024.

10. BSNL to launched indigenous 4G Nationwide in August 2024

  • Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecommunications company in India, is gearing up to launch its 4G services across the country.
  • BSNL’s 4G services are expected to start rolling out in India from August 2024. This comes after years of anticipation and efforts by the company.
  • BSNL is committed to using completely indigenous technology for its 4G rollout. This aligns with the Indian government’s “Atmanirbhar” (self-reliant) policy.
  • The company aims to provide reliable and efficient 4G connectivity to its users.
  • BSNL is working closely with TCS to ensure a stable rollout of 4G services across India.

11. World Red Cross Day observed on May 08

  • World Red Cross Day is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which is celebrated on 8th May each year.
  • This date is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May 1828.

12. World Thalassemia Day observed on May 08

  • Every year on 8th May, people around the world observe World Thalassemia Day to increase public awareness of thalassemia prevention and treatment.
  • It is a hereditary blood condition that impacts the body’s ability to produce hemoglobin.
  • The day seeks to help those who are thalassemia patients by highlighting the significance of genetic testing and promoting universal access to fair and effective treatment.
  • The protein found in red blood cells called hemoglobin, which transports oxygen to all of the body’s cells, is deficient in this disorder.
